Re: Trains seen on NCD!

The reason the scanner has been quiet, is they switched channels. They appear to be using 93 (161.355) North of Muncie and the same 22 (160.44) South.

Re: Trains seen on NCD!

And just like that, the coal train is gone. I haven't seen it in a week now.

Did NS change their policy on calling signals? Radio has been eerily quiet since the beginning of July. Even the local isn't very talkative while switching the ethanol plant.

Re: Trains seen on NCD!

Ha! you know what they say when you assume. It's interesting as historically, very little coal has moved on the NCD. I don't know if this is a new train (i.e. won this round of delivery contracts), a temporary re-route from flooding elsewhere, or an experiment to see if DPU can overcome their...

Re: Trains seen on NCD!

More DPU on the NCD: This past week, I've seen several versions of train 702 running South out of the fort. (I assume it is coming in from Chicago) It is a LOADED coal train with up to 137 cars. So far, only BNSF power on this train and 2x2 with the DPUs on the tail. One day, they stopped the train ...

Re: Bob's Fort Wayne area photo of the week

In all my years of railfanning, I have only been able to witness a SD80MAC in Allen County on two occasions, and the first time BOTH of my camera batteries were dead! This is the second time, taken in March, and though the conditions and location didn't make for very good photos, I'm still thrilled...

Re: Winters Rd

There is little mass in the antenna compared to the signal mast and heads. A plane would suffer minor damage after contacting an antenna. Many years ago, it was a taller, but still not full-sized signal mast.

Re: Penn-Central Heritage unit through the Fort

Last I knew crews can go from Peru to Elkhart, Detroit, or Toledo Eastbound and Decatur Westbound. Trains terminating or getting on/off the ex Wabash will have a crew from Peru or Detroit take a cab the rest of the way they aren't on a train. FWA-Bellevue was its own crew district. FWA-Chicago is a ...

I've always been disappointed when reading a book on something local and seeing little local. That seems to be the norm with few exceptions.

Hopefully, the railroad gets a good share of that, but I'm not optimistic. Those are truckable quantities.

About how short? It would make little sense to have a short stretch of single main, depending upon that length and geological obstacles.

Re: Fort Wayne & Northern Indiana Traction and NKP freight depots

HB Since the traction lines did things a little differently, I can see them handling it many different ways. Some had "LCL" cars (like a baggage car) for parcels and freight. They could be parked at a station so the consignee can come and get it similar to a freight house on a steam line. For good c...
