Re: NKP through Decatur
In Ohio the line from Grand Rapids to Waterville is used by the "Bluebird" passenger train. From Waterville to Maumee it's used by the NS to access a couple of Johns Manville plants. From Maumee into Toledo, bits and pieces still exist as the N&W pieced together a route from it and the former Wabash...

Re: Carter Lumber/Corunna IN
Pretty well every Carter Lumber I've seen (the only exception that I can think of off hand was the one in Maumee OH along Conant Street) had a spur - that was seldom (if ever) used. My guess is that early on they may have used them for "rollers" which were cars of lumber that were sent out into the ...

Re: Connector at Bucyrus Probably Dead in the Water
Based on current business conditions I can understand the NS going with the Bellevue routing for the Heartland corridor trains initially. The NKP is not at capacity and no infrastructure improvements would be needed. Now when business fully returns it may make sense to revisit the idea of using the ...

Re: MAW Trackwork
The Port Authority request was not selected as one of the TIGER grant "winners" - complete list can be found here http://www.dot.gov/documents/finaltigergrantinfo.pdf
So it looks like the current "operational" mode (if what the MAW does can be considered as an "operation") will continue....

Re: MAW Trackwork
While I can't speak of the time before the cutoff was built, the DT&I and Wabash/N&W did do a small bit of interchange at Napoleon. I have some yard lists for the Old line that show some cars being interchanged at Napoleon in the 1972-75 time frame. Most of these cars were covered hoppers of soda as...

Re: NKP 765 to recieve roller bearing upgrade, fundraiser begins
Just out of curiousity, are the existing truck frames being retrofitted for roller bearings, and if so how is that done? Or have a set of roller bearing trucks been secured to replace the existing friction bearing trucks?

Re: MAW Trackwork
The Grand Trunk abandoned the Napoleon-Malinta segment of the original DT&I main back in the mid 1980's. As for the "Water Tower" I'm guessing you mean the one next to the I&O at the Maumee River where the former DT&I "new line" (the Malinta cut-off built in the late 1920's) crosses the river? - It'...

Re: MAW Trackwork
I'm not surprised at the $ figure really. The line is suffering from several generations of deferred maintenance. I'd be willing to bet that the last "programmed" tie and rail & ballast replacements happened while the line was still under Wabash ownership. So you have almost 50 years of (at best) st...

Re: Inland Steel unit trains...
I couldn't find the link for the cars in question, but I believe the coal now goes via CSX through Willard, Garrett etc. As for the marbles, there's barrels full of them at the Johns Manville plant in Defiance (the plant that's next to the Maumee and Western) I worked at the newspaper in Defiance fo...

Re: Corunna Bridge
I'm actually impressed, I was expecting the 'usual' looking bridge (Jersey barriers and perhaps chain-link fence on the sides) but they did a nice job with the more "visually appealing" guardrails. Hopefully the sidewalks are nice & wide for those "down on" shots!

Re: MAW Trackwork
ORDC rides to MAW's rescue - again to provide the money. Most of the money in question will be used to upgrade some trackage near the 'yard' in Defiance to accept 286K cars for Johns Manville. Whatever is left will go for some tie replacement between if Defiance & Napoleon if I remember right.

It may be here, http://dotlibrary1.specialcollection.ne ... _railroads
This is a link to ICC wreck/accident reports from the early 1900's to 1994. Not sure what criteria was used to determine if a wreck/accident was worthy of a report though.
