765 Schedule to Owosso

Does anyone in the Fort Wayne area know the scheduling and route for 765 to go to the Steam Festival in Owosso?

Re: Falstaff Brewery and the NKP

I've scoured the live.search.maps site at the highest magnification, both aerial and birdseye (oblique) views, but I can't detect any trace of what might have been the spur. Of course, it's been over 50 years, and I do still have the memories. (This episode appeared in the Spring 2007 NKPHTS journal...

Re: Falstaff Brewery and the NKP

Thanks, Bryan; that sounds very familiar. I don't have time to check the aerial photos today due to a trip, but will definitely check on Monday when we get back. Ah, the things we remember from our youth!

Falstaff Brewery and the NKP

As a teenager in the late 1950s, I hung around the Nickel Plate tracks near Anthony Blvd. so much during the summer that I got "adopted" by a switch crew who let me ride along on the caboose and engine many times. (Try that today!) One industry they serviced was the old Falstaff brewery on the east ...

FWRRHS Open House in August

Kelly Lynch of the 765 group has told the Nickel Plate group on Yahoo that there's only a 50=50 chance of 765 being under steam for the August 16-17 open house at New Haven; apparently they're having trouble getting everything repaired or replaced in time. No late word on their Web site (http://www....

Re: auto carrier on the old cloverleaf

I understand the Fort Wayne GM truck plant is being cut back or closed temporarily; wonder if those cars are considered excess and stored out of the way because of that.

Re: Name that tower!!

This project is a little early for me (born 1942), but there's a good chance that my mother typed up the booklet on the elevations from original newspapers or microfilm; she did a lot of that sort of work at the public library during the 50s. The head of the library at the time, Rex Potterf, was a b...

Re: Brownhoist Ballast Cleaner

I just ran a Yahoo search and got a couple of hits that mentioned a "Brownhoist Ballast Cleaner" poem, but both took me to a spyware removal page--no go there. I also tried Dogpile and Ask, with no results. I haven't figured out yet how to access Usenet from Windows Vista, so I can't try there until...

Re: Brownhoist Ballast Cleaner

Yup, I tried Googling every combination of the words that I could think of, but most of the hits had to do with fluorescent ballasts, with a few about model RR ballast. I'm still hoping someone remembers it! (My original message here was the first hit!)

Brownhoist Ballast Cleaner

As a teenager in Fort Wayne in the 50s, I belonged to a railfan group that met, as I recall, at the old Central High School. At one meeting, the speaker read a humorous poem about The Brownhoist Ballast Cleaner; each verse ended with those words. Does anyone know of this poem, or possibly remember i...

Re: Where were the hobo camps in FWA???

I have vague memories (it's been 50 years!) a handful of seedy-looking types around a small fire, near the NKP tracks at Glasgow Ave, north of the Deister machine factory. Does that qualify as a "camp"?

New member intro

Hello, all. My name is Dave Wendt; I live in Indianapolis now but grew up in Fort Wayne from 1942 to 1958, so I saw the end of NKP steam. (Their Berkshires used to drop soot on my mother's clean laundry hanging out to dry!) I'm still interested in the RR scene there and belong to the NKPHTS. I'm als...
