765 Detroit Runs

Post by cjberndt » Tue Jul 15, 2014 6:16 am

I like the starburst effect of the headlight in this photo at the swamp along CR-59 south of SR-8, north of St. Joe. The owner of this farm said that after the long freeze last winter, bass, some over 20 in. long, were everywhere around the swamp. MP 120.4 is on the signal post.

When Wabash built the Butler-New Haven track in 1901-02, this swamp was the most difficult part of the project. Newspapers reported that the track crew dumped old railcars, ties, trees, etc., etc., here to build up the base.

Great photo.

Did anyone get any photos from downtown?
Due to family commitments could make it.

There's also old cars, farm machinery, ect, ect, in that swamp too. The Auburn Automotive Company used the road as a test bed for the autos that they made and several of them became stuck so they just left them.

I did get one quick grab shot of it downtown last weekend, everything else I took was video. I'm going to try to get some video clips put together and uploaded soon. It sure was neat to follow this thing all around NE Indiana last weekend. My wife and boys had a great time too.

A friend visited the train shed on the Ft. Wayne elevation but didn't take any photos of it. He said NS people were washing it down the day before the first trip. I've never been up on the platforms.

This was looking north from 1/2 mile south of the B&O diamond in St. Joe. The people at the diamond showed up about 5 minutes before the train.
