Is the group aware that John Marty has left us? I think John passed away about the second week of September.

So John took the Last Train out of Towne ? He did have alot of knowledge of rail happenings from this area, Worked the Tower in Wolcottville IN and dispatched the NCD, I was told by people other than John that he knew how to keep trains a moving, From talking to John I gathered he was an Ole School person and just did not fit in the new way the NS people wanted things to run. John knew alot of people, I wish him well on his Journey, Hopefully he caught a Highball signal out of Towne,

According to this paragraph I found on the Kendallville, IN newspaper's website, John died on Sept. 11:

KENDALLVILLE — John C. Marty, a longtime weather observer for the National Weather Service and railroad aficionado, has died. He was 67. According to Noble County Coroner Dr. Terry Gaff, Marty died on Saturday, Sept. 11.

May God rest his soul :(

It all depended on how well John liked you and what train symbol you had that day!
If you had a 200 symbol you ran, otherwise you might see every siding from Fort Wayne to Cincinnati.

I heard he had suffered a heart attack or something, but didn't know he had passed.

Wow, I ran into him at "his perch" a couple of times last year on my way home from Michigan. He was a guerrilla style train watcher. He'd come in jest before the train, sit and watch it go by, and leave, so it was hard to get a chance to talk to him. When I did, you could tell he wasn't feeling well.

Noone is talking on his radio now. May he rest in peace.

I remember when John was making Kingsland Shuffle-type meets at Lagro back in the 1970's, when he used to work the long swing, which involved working two days at the Montpelier Dispatcher Office and then the other three at the Peru Dispatcher Office, before it was all consolidated into Fort Wayne about 1979.
