I looked up the heritage of this locomotive and its orginally a NW loco so at some point something had happen to require the replacement metal..

Ah yes, I see you found the original NS "heritage unit" 
That unit, 6163, has baffled everyone at the CRHS, PCRRHS, and local railfans everywhere for a very long time. The story that former NS employee Chip Syme heard was that it went to Altoona for some repairs and came back with these rather cool looking engine doors, who knows how long those pieces had been sitting around Altoona before being used on this engine...
