The tax record legal descriptions for Applied Metals and for Schenkel include the former R/W between Sherman and St. Mary's Ave., which means it is owned by the adjoining properties. However, there is no RR entity in the chain of title, so it's possible that both parties claimed the abandoned R/W as theirs. If the railroad held it as an easement only, the owners could have a strong legal case.

I recall the sign for MP 2 being was just west of Sherman Ave. when they pulled up the track there in the past decade. Regardless which direction or route is followed from Sherman or St. Mary's Ave., MP 0 is in the middle of nowhere.

Two good presentations were given this week by the consultants as they presented their final draft of the riverfront master plan. The consultants really believe in the potential of HWJ and the 765 and often specifically site the attraction as being something central to activating the area and drawing people in.

While the new map and renderings are more detailed, we'll be working with the consultants to finalize the layout of HWJ. We have a conference call with some additional rail/tourism consultants scheduled in the coming weeks to discuss additional elements of the plan as well.
Fort Wayne’s riverfront plan is one step closer to being finalized and envisions a unique waterfront experience. The City’s riverfront consultant, SWA Group, unveiled the latest version of the proposal at a public meeting this evening. The draft plan calls for a focus on nature, recreation and development with construction of a riverfront promenade being the first phase of the plan.

The promenade would be located on both the north and south banks of the St. Marys River. It would incorporate two levels, one lower to the water and one higher that would connect to shopping, dining and residential areas along Superior Street. Rooftop terraces and pedestrian bridges would also be part of the promenade area, as would Headwaters Junction, a rail-themed attraction and home to the historic 765 steam locomotive.

“We’re envisioning a waterfront experience unique to Fort Wayne,” said Kinder Baumgardner, president of SWA Group. “The combination of elements in this draft plan will create something extraordinary, something you will only find in Fort Wayne.”

Now that headwaters junction has a battle plan i have a few questions.

The first phase calls for a narrow gauge line to the Fort Wane Zoo, is the train going to be more like a generic gas powered train like the zoo has, or cedar points narrow gauge which is live steam coal fired. 2nd Is the option of running freight trains gone? 3rd Does the Wabash no.534 have to ability to run in the future or just a cosmetic restoration?

First Phase - to start with, yes, a train similar to the zoo, but likely 2-foot gauge, so the line itself has the ability to host 2-foot gauge equipment of any variety. Everyone involved in planning understands the allure/desire of additional equipment beyond what is already powering the trains at the Zoo. Example: http://wwfry.org/

Freight - long term part of the plan, not covered in the first three phases.

Wabash no. 534 - justification for restoration would be routine operation at HWJ, so it would definitely be part of the active roster.
