NS run through trains on the CF&E...

Post by bnsf8000 » Thu Nov 27, 2014 9:50 am

Happy Thanksgiving! WB NS run through Van Wert at 9:55am. Leading were NS OLS 9254/BNSF 5814/BNSF 4946 with around 121 cars. Train had 38 gons upfront. Rest of train had gons, boxes, centerbeams, tanks, plastics, empty coil car and grain cars. Nice mixed freight. Plus, a friend said a CSX grain train was through VW at 4:20am this morning. Keeping the rails polished this holiday.

Another railfan from Van Wert said another NS run through was past VW just after 11PM Friday night. Symbol was 19A.

Yet another 19A was through Van Wert around 2AM this morning with 3 NS widecabs and a BNSF warbonnet.

I noticed yesterday there was a new sign at the PRR/ CN crossing in Van Wert. "Estrey" in what looks like PC green with white letters. Ken 8)

So, they've spelled it wrong. Probably one of the signs like the many signs along NS right-of-ways these days. Not surprised that it's spelled wrong, NS seems to have a knack for that.

Wayne I'm not 100% on the spelling myself. I just caught it out of the corner on my eye. I will try to get a pic tomorrow, Ken 8)

On the Marion Branch, er, District the town signs for Warsaw on both the north and south sides of town are green with white lettering. Doesn't sound like anything more than a high visibility reflective sign.

Estrey is spelled correctly. There was a siding from that point to west of Van Wert near John Brown road. the switch near John Brown road was Richey switch to avoid confusion with train orders the east switch was named EaSTRichEY. There was a sign for Richey near John Brown rd., but I drove by today it is not there.

I DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE HISTORY OF THE TOWN OR TOWER. I WROTE QUITE A FEW TRAIN ORDERS AND DISPATCHED A LOT MORE TO THE TOWER. ALL OF THEM WERE SPELLED "ESTRY" .

Very strange I am sitting here looking at one of my pictures from 1972 and the green sign on the tower reads ESTRY and that is what my train orders I was handed up in the late 60's said. Somebody is pulling your leg on the spelling as I have lived here 67 years and it always has been spelled ESTRY.

When earth came of it axis, the seas started to boil and frogs fell from the sky I realized you are right I'M SORRY!!!!!! . THERE IS NO E IN ESTRY, but NS gives CFE hundreds of millions of dollars to upgrade and resurrect the pennsy, and everyone on all of the railfan sites complain about is track work being done when its to cold or misspelled signs. I grew up near the EL, and know I will never go thru the misery NS is putting the pennsy fans thru.

Here's the pic of the sign at the crossing. I guess it doesn't have the PC slant that I first thought it did. Ken 8)

I've always wondered where the name Estry came from. Thanks for the explanation. Gee, WillieVW, you're not offended or anything, are you?
