NS 7111 is pulling NS 36 and NS 38 track inspection cars out of the fort. NS 36 is odd looking power car with a home-made psuedo cab that rides on rockwell sd40 trucks. 38 is more typical looking track geometry car. Sorry, he was rolling at track speed, no chance to get a picture.

Heads up Jett he's headed your way.
About 7:30 PM they were at Portland, In. They tied up in the siding and were waiting for a recrew. I had no chance for chase or photos. jett

I decided to try and find it this morning so I had the scanner on and heard a train at Redkey wanting permission into East yards. Ah ha, I thought that was the train I was looking for so grabbed the camera and video cam to go check it out. I found the L82 crew had come and picked up the L8o train from last night at Redkey. Grabbed a couple shots of them and returned home. Later I heard scanner chatter and the Geometry Train NS 908 was at Gilman heading towards CP230 to go South. Off I go again to Muncie. As I arrive at Walnut St. I see the rear of CSX Q131 at MP 231. I arrive at CP230 about 15 minutes before the 908. They stop at Elliott St. for another 15 minutes or more where seven NS employees are milling around. I stay put at CP230. Finally they come with 7111-5648-NS#38-NS#36. I hear the scanner beep up the dispatcher and they are stopping on the main near the Muncie Belt. Hurray, I’m thinking. Another pass at 23rd St. I go and wait and wait. They back into the old South yards and stay there the next four hours. The cable blocking the drive to the South yards was down so I drove back and grabbed some shots. About 4:30PM they departed South. In the time I was waiting I saw Q349-Q348-Q132, NS 124-177-174-L82. 174 was meeting 175 at Gilman. I had enough so headed for home. 175 had 8968 leading so I didn’t feel I missed much. CSX Q348 had some real ratty looking cars. I had not seen them before BFTX. Looked to be Wood Chip. Q349 was real long. I got a photo of a guy who took his coat off and used it for a pillow and laid down on the side walk waiting for them to pass.

Wasn't fun out on the rails the last 24 hours.
Take 50W for example: 50W lost their air horns coming into Kingsland MON21FEb2011. There was some discussion with the dispatcher on how to proceed and if stopping and flagging the crossings was necessary. One interesting comment was "if I'm reading the rules right, I can shove a car through the crossing faster than I can run a locomotive without a horn." While this was going on, the weather in Ossian was freezing rain and lead unit 8364's windshield wipers stoppped working and the interior hand crank was also broken. They stopped in Kingsland to chip the windshield clear so they could see if the crossing protection was working (and maybe avoid a stop and flag). They limped into the fort at restricted speed, stopping at crossing without active protection, i.e. private crossings. I heard the horn as they crawled by and I've heard women whistle for their dog louder than that.

L99 was right behind 50W and while entering Kingsland their lone unit died, blocking US224. The engineer was worried it was going to take a fuel truck to get it started again as they must have been running on fumes. After a trip out on the ice covered deck to the prime mover or two, it came back to life and pulled the train into the siding. I didn't get a close look at this train, but someone said it was a 4-axle unit and slightly overtonnage.

TUE22fEB2011
The fun continues as the freezing rain gave way to 5" of snow. 313 had everyone's favorite unit W&LE 6315. Normally they leave East Wayne Yard in the evening and head to Muncie for a drop-off and pick-up and back to the fort in the middle of the night. The return trip last night drug into this morning. To make a long trip even longer, they stopped at the Bluffton Ethanol plant to make a pick-up. I have to scratch my head on this as L68 and L69 both stop there M-F plus units trains service this plant. They must have been some really HOT ethanol cars that couldn't wait 5 hours for today's L68. 313 had to be bumping their 12 hours. When they left they had 76 cars in tow, mostly loads, as they picked up 20+ loaded tank cars and had 30 some loaded tie gons on the rear.

197 normally leaves East Wayne around 1600 and heads for Cincy. Yesterday's version was waiting in Kingsland for 313 to make the pick-up at 0900 as I drove by.

Looks like Wabash Central pulled a string of ATW autoracks out of storage as there was a string sitting in Bluffton this morning. L68 will have a long pick-up as they will have to put the crossing cuts back together and lace the hoses and air test after stopping at the ethanol plant.

I thought they were out by Van Buren.

Still there Wed morning, so L68 did not pick them up Tuesday afternoon.

I saw Wabash Central moving them Thursday morning on my way to work, but I was running late, so I don't know if they took them to store somewhere or was just moving them out of their way until NS took them.

I saw a northbound MOW train today, very rare train too. The engine was long hood forward pulling a few gravel cars, a empty track panel car, a crane, and a caboose! in N&W paint. :D

915, it has been working down south (Richmond) it came back to Muncie yesterday and was going to head north, but the dispatcher and chief weren't aware the plans and held them at Muncie over night. They put the train away at Muncie South Yard, and came out this morning and headed north to the Fort.

There was a light power movement of 5 locomotives Thu21Apr2011 headed to Muncie from the fort. Later that day 313 joked about having 13 locomotives, but only had two (unless it wasn't 313 I watched go by).

I ended up leaving Muncie just in time to see 289 roll into Royerton for 216 and 216 beat me home even though 216 had to slow down for 177 to clear at Montpelier and 313 and 197 were waiting in Kingsland.

L69 left their train in the Bluffton Ethanol plant and took an ethanol train back towards the fort. I wonder how badly that messed up the crew rotations.

Not sure, I heard them making where to put the power the other night, but didn't pay any attention to it.

Maybe that was it?
