I followed the NS from Muncie to Richmond 6-27 and saw these containers on the rear of 251 at Walnut Level. A first for me. How long they been doing this?

Those are rail-roaders, not roadrailers. They are a "next-generation" of intermodal that TC is testing. Instead of inflating the suspension to get the trailer over the bogie, the truck driver backs the trailer onto the bogie and it slides up the tapered ramps into position. So far, I have only seen them intermittently on 251/264.

Railrunners
These are known as "rail-runners" Triple Crown uses them only occasionally for the Railrunner business group. These are not owned by TCS, only operated on behalf of another carrier.
