GR&I Nov. 1979

Post by cjberndt » Sat Oct 17, 2015 10:06 am

This is what the GR&I looked like looking west from CR600E, 2.5 miles northwest of the NYC-GR&I diamond at Kendallville, Nov. 1979. This was the location of a passing siding, but I don't see it in the photo.

The GR&I north of Kendallville was abandoned in 1979. These photos show the track gone between the south side of LaGrange and the south side Valentine later that year.

I don't recall seeing any trains, or any freight cars at industries north of Kendallville, in or after late-1979. Was the north part served from Michigan or other track?

Thanks again for posting! Wish I could have seen the tracks when they were in but I was only a toddler when the tracks were being lifted.

By Nov. 1979, the track from the NYC at Kendallville to the south side of LaGrange had been out of service for a long time. The diamond was out at Kendallville, and although there was still a connection to the NYC there, the photos above show that the track was not in use north of Kendallville. The diamond was also out at Wolcottville, so GR&I's only track connection north of LaGrange was in Michigan.

There were no freight cars anywhere in or north of LaGrange, and as the attached photo shows, the mainline through Howe had not been used for some months. Note also that both side tracks had been removed.

The track was intact in and south of Kendallville, and although there were no freight cars in Kendallville, the RR was still serving Kraft. The elevators were still in service in LaOtto and Huntertown, and Huntertown's depot was still standing, but there were no freight cars in those towns on Nov. 10.

The bridge over Washington Center Rd. in Ft. Wayne was still in place as was the track in and north of Ft. Wayne.

Thanks for posting. I pass through Valentine and the Mill in Howe on 120, kind of wish it was still in.

As far as I know the GR&I was in service between Kendallville and Fort Wayne until 1982.The tracks were removed in 1984.

How many sidings were on the GR&I north of the NYC E-W Mainline like in the 50's ? It looks by the pictures that the construction was better than most and this was a Secondary line was it not ?

An undated track chart shows one passing track north of Kendallville, one each north and south of the diamond at Wolcottville, two at LaGrange, and one at Howe.

MSO PREX 1616 and ALAB 500006 were parked on the GR&I just north of the state line yesterday. No one was around.

Yes, Frank Miller & Sons, 230 Bogen Rd. Ice melt equipment and supplies.

Why does MSO keep this train in this remote area? Is it safer there than in Sturgis or elsewhere?

Remote might be the key word. Also it is the furthest away from White Pigeon they normally get.

The locomotive usually parks over where the depot used to be located and is not usually kept at Miller's I
would guess the reason that it was left at Miller's is that is where they are going to start the next day ?
Abbott Labs get switched on a regular basis and International Paper is now called Atlantic Packaging.
Back in the days of Conrail the locomotive and a caboose where kept near the at the diamond.
