Waterloo, 1957 Wreck

Post by cjberndt » Tue Jul 05, 2016 9:57 pm

The wreck seen here at Waterloo on the Air Line was late-May or June 1, 1957. The bay window was torn off the passenger depot. It was replaced after the depot was moved in the 1980s. WX tower remained in service for a while.

Do you know what time of the day this happened? Was there an agent or anyone in the depot and what about the operator at WX? Do you know if NYC rules required the operator to be outside to watch trains by? I imagine it was the scare of the operator's life.

They might be on a 2nd track as they appear upright and in-line.

I suspect those coaches are part of the work train.

This view, looking east on Lincoln St., shows the coaches in the wreck train. The automobile at left-center is about at the Ft. Wayne & Jackson crossing.

The wreck was just after midnight, Friday, May 10, 1957. An axle broke on a tank car on an eastbound train, just east of the depot and tower, derailing 30 cars. No one was injured. The depot agent had just left and the tower operator, on the platform watching the train, ran for cover. The broken axle was on car #76 of 122 in the train. One of the tracks was back in operation Friday evening, and the other was operating Saturday.

The cars hit the depot and tower, and demolished the express freight house and the new but not-yet-operational CTC controls.

In the photo of eastbound Lake Shore Limited is WX tower, the depot and the express freight office.

Of interest is that the Waterloo Press was silent as to the wreck; it was never mentioned. Initial and follow-up reports were in the Garrett and Auburn papers, and probably in Butler. Also odd was that the June 1, 1957 Ft. Wayne Roto article didn't mention the date of the wreck. I've since seen a couple photos that have June 1, 1957 on them as the date of the wreck.
