ERIE in Decatur IN

Post by Notch 8 » Sat Jan 04, 2020 8:31 am

An Internet photo (Credit Unknown), taken sometime between 1963 and 1969, showing the West and trackside elevations of the depot, seen from the E/B passenger platform.

Details noted:

1. A W/B freight, powered by a pair of ALCO FA locomotives (One in the Erie’s black and yellow Freight scheme, and the other in the post 1963 EL Gray-Maroon-Yellow) passes the Decatur depot.

2. At some time, the exterior of the Decatur depot changed from the original painted wood to a smooth stucco-like surface which was then painted. This photo seems to suggest that the change has already been applied. Also, the paint color scheme has departed from the Erie building standard; while the windows are still close to the ‘green with red trim’, the building sides appear gray rather than the normal ‘Depot Buff’.

3. The roofpeak trim has also disappeared.

4. In the background, standing to the right of the E/B track, the Winchester Street Crossing Guard can be seen.

5. This photo shows that like the previous depots East of Kingsland, the Signal Pole line runs over the top of the depot, rather than being set back.

I guess they weren't worried about the lines falling onto the building.

You also don't see any hoops laying around, so the radios in every locomotive/caboose must have eliminated the need to hoop up orders. (or they only did it at the tower beside the diamond)
