Re: FTW Railroad Museum
I would say pretty soon after 765 was moved out there which was what, 1974-75?
If my opinions offend you, you should see the ones I keep to myself........
Re: FTW Railroad Museum
That was the extent of FWRHS facilities while 765 was being rebuilt, no fancy shop. Corner of Ryan and Edgerton Roads.
Re: FTW Railroad Museum
I never knew that 765 ever resided there..

Re: FTW Railroad Museum
Yes. #767 was the locomotive that participated in the dedication ceremony of the Nickel Plate elevation through Fort Wayne. After the steamers were retired, the city requested #767 for public display, but she was in very poor shape compared to #765, which was a favorite of the Fort Wayne terminal and had been stored inside the engine house for some time after its active service ended. The railroad decided to switch the number boards and repaint the other numbers and donated #765 to the city as #767. Whether anyone with the city was actually aware of that slight of hand, or even would have cared, I have never been able to determine. The fake #767 was displayed near Lawton Park in Fort Wayne from 1963 until the early 70's when the FWRHS was formed to rescue the locomotive from its increasingly decrepit condition as a lawn ornament. The locomotive was moved to the site you see above and over the next five years or so restored to operating condition outside in the elements by some EXTREMELY dedicated volunteers that we all owe a HUGE debt of gratitude to. Sometime before the engine became operational again, she was returned to her proper number of #765.

A little more trivia from when we briefly renumbered the engine back to 767 in 2016:
